Interupting

Purpose

Direct: Teaching the children grace and courtesy in the classroom.
 
Indirect:  Awareness of their body and control of their movements.

Points of Interests
Placing your hand gently on the other child’s shoulder.

Presentation

Introduction

Ask two older children to help you show the younger children how to kindly interrupt.  Let the children know briefly how you plan on showing the lesson. Invite 3-4 children to come participate in your lesson. Show each child where exactly to sit. Have the two older children sit next to each other. Once the children are seated, you sit so that you can see them all, they all can see you, and yet you are not in front of them.

Preparation

  1. Tell the children that although it is not polite to interrupt, we sometimes need that person’s attention for just a moment.
  2. Tell them that we are all going to practice how to politely interrupt.
  3. Have the two older children stand up and begin “fake” talking.

Presentation

  1. Stand up and stand next to one of the children.
  2. Very gently place your right hand on the shoulder of one of the children.
  3. Say, “I’m sorry to interrupt, but I need your attention.”
  4. Remove your hand from the child’s shoulder.
  5. The older child should stop talking and turn around to face you.
  6. Sit down in the group.
  7. Ask the children, “Shall I show you again?” Repeat.

Invite each child to have a turn of politely interrupting.

Conclusion

Tell the children that they now know how to interrupt politely and can use it if they need someone’s attention.

Excuse them one at a time, making sure each child has thought of what he would like to de next.
